It splits life into a fixed 120-year cycle, handed out among the nine grahas (planets). At any moment you are living inside one planet's major period, and that planet quietly sets the themes of those years — the lessons, the openings, and the tests.
Unlike sun-sign horoscopes, which are the same for a twelfth of the world, your dasha sequence is unique to the exact minute and place you were born. It answers a different question: not "what is today like," but "which chapter of my life am I in, and what is it for."
Every person moves through the same nine planets in the same order — but each of us enters the cycle at a different point, so no two timelines line up. The lengths are fixed:

Your starting planet is not random. At the moment you were born, the Moon sat at a precise point in the sky. That point falls inside one of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), and each nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planets. The ruler of your birth nakshatra is the planet whose mahadasha you were born into — and how far the Moon had already travelled through that nakshatra decides how much of that first period was left when you arrived.
From that single anchor, the entire 120-year sequence unrolls forwards. Kaal computes this the traditional way — the Moon's sidereal longitude using the Lahiri ayanamsa — so the timeline you see is astronomically grounded, not a guess.
A mahadasha is the big chapter. But inside each one run nine antardashas (sub-periods), one per planet, in the same fixed order. If the mahadasha is the climate, the antardasha is the weather. A Saturn mahadasha with a Venus antardasha feels very different from the same Saturn years running a Mars antardasha — same nineteen-year climate, very different weather inside it.
This is why two people in the same mahadasha can be living completely different years: their sub-periods, and the exact dates those turn over, are their own.
