Which Mahadasha am I in?

A mahadasha is the major planetary period you're living through — a chapter of your life ruled by one planet. Here's what each one means, how long they last, and how to find the exact mahadasha and sub-period you're in today.

What is a mahadasha?

In the Vedic Vimshottari Dasha system, life is divided into nine mahadashas — major periods, each ruled by a planet and lasting anywhere from 6 to 20 years. The ruling planet colours the whole chapter: its themes, its opportunities, and its challenges become the backdrop of those years. You are always inside one mahadasha, and knowing which one is the single most useful thing Vedic astrology can tell you about your timing.

The nine mahadashas and what they mean

MahadashaYearsWhat this chapter is about
Ketu7Letting go, spirituality, quiet endings that clear the ground
Venus (Shukra)20Love, relationships, beauty, comfort and creativity
Sun (Surya)6Identity, recognition, authority, stepping into your own light
Moon (Chandra)10Emotions, home, family, care and belonging
Mars (Mangal)7Drive, courage, competition, building and fighting for things
Rahu18Ambition, sudden rise, foreign and unconventional paths
Jupiter (Guru)16Wisdom, luck, teachers, marriage, children and growth
Saturn (Shani)19Discipline, patience, hard work and durable foundations
Mercury (Budh)17Mind, communication, business, learning and skill

Mahadasha and antardasha — the sub-period inside

Each mahadasha is split into nine antardashas (sub-periods), one per planet. The antardasha is what makes "this year" feel different from "last year" even within the same big chapter. When people ask why a supposedly tough Saturn period had a sweet, lucky stretch in the middle, the answer is almost always the antardasha — perhaps a Venus or Jupiter sub-period running inside it.

So the honest answer to "what's happening in my life right now" is a pair: your mahadasha (the chapter) and your antardasha (the current scene). Kaal shows both, with the exact date each one turns over.

How to find your current mahadasha

You can't read your mahadasha from your birthday alone — it depends on the Moon's exact position at your birth. The steps:

Rather than do this by hand, enter your details in Kaal — it computes the whole sequence and drops you straight onto the season you're living now, with a scrollable view of every chapter before and after it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be in two mahadashas at once?

No — you're always in exactly one mahadasha. But inside it you're simultaneously in one antardasha (sub-period), so it can feel like two forces at play.

What happens when a mahadasha changes?

A mahadasha change is one of the most significant shifts in a chart — the ruling theme of your life hands over to a new planet. Kaal marks exactly when your current chapter ends and which planet opens next.

Is a Saturn or Rahu mahadasha bad?

Not bad — demanding. Saturn asks for patience and honest work; Rahu amplifies ambition and can bring sudden rises. Both reward you when handled with open eyes. Sade sati is a separate Saturn transit often confused with the Saturn mahadasha.
